Belassal: "We are facing the most dangerous crisis since the Second World War"

By حزب الاتحاد الدستوريMay 9, 20231 min read

The head of the Social Democratic Constitutional group in the House of Representatives, Chaoui Belassal, stated that "Morocco is facing a complex crisis with multiple causes and impacts, unprecedented since the Second World War, and it is our country's good fortune that we have completed strategic, sectoral, and structural projects and programs over recent decades."

Belassal added, in an intervention during the Head of Government's monthly oral session, that "the subject under discussion does not tolerate political posturing, pre-emptive judgments, or political grandstanding, but rather requires invoking the spirit of constructive responsibility and qualitative contribution to strengthening the domestic front. Because we are all bound by the Royal directives expressed at the opening of the first legislative session of this term in October 2021, where His Majesty stressed the necessity of establishing an integrated national system concerning the strategic reserve of basic materials, including foodstuffs, to ensure the reinforcement of the country's strategic security."

The head of the Social Democratic Constitutional group in the House of Representatives noted that "the current food crisis is the result of surging demand and rising prices for raw and basic materials, inputs for production, distribution, and transportation processes down to consumer markets. This increase in the costs of these operations is exacerbated by escalating daily inflation suffered by everyone—consumers, producers, and service providers alike—leading to a liquidity crunch and the drying up of liquidity pools, alongside an increase in interest rates and bank loans due to central bank monetary measures."

The Constitutional Union places employment and purchasing power at the heart of its electoral platform.

On September 7 in Casablanca, the Constitutional Union (UC) launched its platform for the 2026 legislative elections, prioritizing job creation, purchasing power, and productive growth under the commitment "A Productive Economy, More Job Opportunities, and Stronger Purchasing Power." Key Challenges Addressed: Secretary-General Mohamed Joudar highlighted that ~2.9 million Moroccan youth are currently not in employment, education, or training (NEETs), alongside inflation pressures and market intermediaries driving up living costs. Core Proposals: Align vocational training with market demands and support first-job access for youth. Improve the business climate, expand financing for SMEs/startups, and combat monopolies and rent-seeking. Strengthen market competition and supply chain transparency to curb inflation rather than relying solely on temporary price fixes. Combine private initiative with strategic state oversight to ensure growth benefits all social classes and regions.
