His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid is representing His Majesty King Mohammed VI at the presidential segment of the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 27), which kicked off on Monday in the Egyptian resort of Sharm El-Sheikh.
Upon his arrival at the International Conference Center, His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid was received by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
After posing for a commemorative photo with heads of state and leaders, His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid joined the conference hall.
Around 110 heads of state and government will deliver their national statements regarding the handling of climate change issues and countries' plans to increase their commitments to reduce emissions.
The summit also provides an opportunity to discuss ways to mobilize financial resources and investments to confront climate change, in order to reduce emissions, enhance adaptation to impacts already occurring, and build resilience.
Pushing wealthy nations to fulfill their commitments to finance climate action tops the conference agenda, especially amid a waning international focus on climate change, as the goal of mobilizing $100 billion annually to fund emission reduction and climate adaptation projects in developing countries remains elusive.
Several issues regarding mobilizing action will also be discussed, providing an opportunity to consider the impacts of climate change in Africa, and to outline visions for confronting these challenges through science, solutions, and financing, while taking into account the groups benefiting from and affected by the acceleration of climate action.
