Mr. Chaoui Belassal, member of the Morocco-EU Joint Parliamentary Committee, confirmed that the European Parliament's ratification of the new fisheries agreement between Morocco and the European Union today, Tuesday, in Strasbourg, will give a new impetus to strategic relations between the two sides.
In a statement to the Maghreb Arab Press agency (MAP), he stated that the European Parliament's vote in favor of the fisheries agreement represents "a new start for a new future to address the challenges facing the Mediterranean basin."
On this occasion, Mr. Belassal praised the efforts of Moroccan diplomacy in all its components for advancing strategic relations between Morocco and the European Union.
Furthermore, he emphasized that by ratifying the fisheries agreement, the European Parliament refuted all lies, allegations, and theses promoted by enemies of the Kingdom's territorial integrity.
The European Parliament adopted the new fisheries agreement by an overwhelming majority today during a plenary session in Strasbourg (415 votes in favor, 189 against, and 49 abstentions). The new agreement between Morocco and the European Union, which covers the fishing zone extending from latitude 35 to latitude 22 (from Cap Spartel in northern Morocco to Cap Blanc in the south of the Kingdom), specifies fishing zones and access conditions for the European fleet, while increasing the annual financial contribution from 40 to 52.2 million euros (a 30% increase).
The agreement also includes provisions aimed at maximizing benefits and positive impacts for local populations in the affected regions. Additionally, it contains technical conditions aimed at preserving and protecting marine resources and the environment.
